What the Bible Says Freedom Actually Looks Like

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” – John 8:36

Maybe you’ve read this verse dozens of times but truthfully, you don’t actually know what freedom in Christ actually really looks like or what it means to experience that freedom. We hear people talking about it but what does this freedom actually look like “lived out” on a daily basis? Here’s how to live out freedom in Christ on a daily basis:

Total Surrender

Lordship means a full-blown total surrender to God and His authority and leadership. Period. It means we literally confess with our mouths and proclaim through our thoughts and actions that Jesus has complete control to lead us in every area of our lives.

That doesn’t mean we don’t get moving and just sit and wait before we take the first step. We are to step out in faith and stay in constant communion with God trusting that He is indeed guiding us and will continually lead us where we are to go.

Knowing Your Identity

If you don’t actually know who you are, then how can you truly live the life you were intended? To know who we are, we must look to God and learn who He is and then see who He says we are. He has told us in His Word who we are but it is our job to read it, receive it and believe it.

If we don’t actually profess our true identity in Christ, then we leave ourselves susceptible to outside influences or people to “put on” titles to us that God never intended we possess. Knowing your identity in Christ will remind you of your total dependence of God for everything and enable you to experience the freedom He died to give you.

Leaning Not on Your Own Understanding

“’For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’”declares the Lord. “’As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. His ways our not our ways and His thoughts are not our thoughts.’” – Isaiah 55:8-9

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, submit to Him and He shall make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

God thoughts are so above and beyond our thoughts. So if we start relying on our own understanding of our life or life’s circumstances, then we are headed for trouble. God sees the beginning from the end and He is working all things together for the good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose (Romans 8:28).

The end goal for us is to look more and more like Jesus. So, we can trust that in everything we experience in life, whether it is exceptional or excruciating, that God is somehow, someway working it all together for the good even if the circumstance itself is not good. This is our freedom each day that lifts us above our circumstances and to fix our eyes totally and completely on Jesus.

So, do you want to be free?
