Why Aren’t There More Women at Christian Conferences?

Yesterday, a little Twitter feud (the best and most official sort of feud) started when A Year of Biblical Womanhood author Rachel Held Evans tweeted about The Nines—a very popular annual online church leadership conference. She called the conference out for having 100 speakers, only 4 of which were women. “This is not what the Church looks like,” she declared. The tweet prompted a defensive response from conference organizer Todd Rhoades, who tweeted back that several women had declined his invitation to speak. The whole thing went back and forth a few times, and whether or not Twitter was the right place to hash it all out, Evans’ point stands. Jonathan Merritt has posted this look at female representation on the Christian conference circuit, and it’s very telling.
