Why We Don’t Pray

The writer of Psalm 91 says God will deliver us from the plans of the wicked and evil one as well as from the plans if wicked and evil men. But because that deliverance comes from dwelling in the secret place of the Most High, it requires us to seek God’s face daily, to live in a vital daily relationship with Him—something not all of us do.

Why don’t we seek God daily?

Simply because we do not think we have to. Not that any of us would ever verbalize such a notion, but deep within our hearts there is a part of us that thinks that unless we are in the midst of crisis, then we are able to handle a good many of our challenges on our own.

In doing that, we are letting ourselves be lulled to sleep by a subtle sense of unbelief and disobedience. If you do not believe you need to seek God every day, then you will not apply any faith to do so. If you think you can take care of yourself through thick and thin, then you will not believe there’s really any reason to put out the effort to obey God, and you won’t.

It’s the same way with prayer. We don’t pray every day because we do not think we have to. We think we can skip days, skip weeks, skip months without communing with the Lord. Again, these are not things we would verbalize and state as convictions, but our lack of prayer indicates a belief that prayer is not absolutely necessary for remaining under the shadow of the Almighty.

We think because there are enough props in our lives, enough crutches, enough things on which to lean that we can somehow make it alone. Then when we reach the end of ourselves we are faced with the inescapable conclusion that we cannot make it on our own.

A relationship with God is meant to be intimate, involved and ongoing—a daily thing. That’s where our motivation to place our lives under the mighty hand of God comes from. But without faith in and obedience to God, it just will not happen.

For all of us who are Christians, our passion should be—even if we aren’t practicing it perfectly—to obey God and dwell under His mighty hand and under His gift of protection.
