The Problem Of The Tongue

What is the most dangerous part of the body? It has the ability to leave wounds that never heal and scars that a person can carry for a lifetime. It can rip apart marriages, ravage friendships and split churches. What is the organ that can wreck this havoc on our lives? Our tongue.

Indie songwriter Dave Barnes sings in “Sticks and Stones”: Bruises heal and cuts will seal/ but your words beat the life from me.

The most innocuous of body parts can cause so much hurt and pain. James says the tongue is like a bit that fits into a horse’s mouth or like a rudder that steers a ship. Likewise, James says, “The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts” (3:5). We have a paradox in such a little organ. “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness” (James 3:9).

What can be done to tame our tongues?

[1] The old cliché to think before you speak is good advice. Think about whether your criticism of others is constructive or will crush the spirit.

[2] Train your tongue to say words of love and blessing. Your words to someone hold more weight than you may realize. I still carry the scars of teasing and ridicule from my childhood.

[3] Most importantly, ask God to reveal any hurt you have caused with your tongue. Pray that He will help you tame your tongue and through words show others His love.
