This ‘Drive-In Church’ Worship Guide Is, Somehow, Real

Not every church is going the virtual service route for pandemic season. As Emily Miller noted over at RNS, some churches are opting for a drive-in service situation, repurposing old drive-in movie theaters to host church while maintaining social distancing guidelines. As options go, it’s not a bad one. You’re in the safety of your car, but you still get an approximation of hanging out with your church community. And as West Liberty, Ohio’s First Church of God proved, you can even find ways to interact.

Yes, it’s real. But is it useful? Well, that depends on what you expect out of church. On the one hand, “spraying washer fluid” sounds a little on the nose for baptism. On the other hand, this is a pretty creative way of helping people ask for prayer. We are in a real-time experiment right now and there are definitely no bad ideas. (Well, almost no bad ideas).

The worship guide was first reported by Ohio’s WHIO and kudos to anchor Cheryl McHenry for playing it straight as possible: the mark of a true journalism veteran.

Bob Kemp-Baird, pastor of the Daytona Beach Drive-in Christian Church in Daytona Beach, Florida, told Christianity Today  “Churches are trying to find any way they can to gather people together. They’re really feeling from their congregants, ‘we want to come together to worship, but we recognize the health risks. So what do we do?’”
