Fighting For Sexual Purity

Although the gravity of terrorism is at an extent that we could not comprehend, I believe there is a similar insidious killer out there. That being lust. It’s just as destructive to one’s life as a bomb is to the many it affects. Through the eyes of an average human being, it’s nothing more than a hormonal reaction. But what is lust? According to the Webster Dictionary it is defined as “a strong sexual desire.” But through the lens of our Lord it is the idolization of flesh that leads to a slow and painful spiritual death, for both genders.

Let me give you a brief example. Men, you’re driving down a residential neighborhood and you spot a female jogger. Her hair is bouncing as she runs and she’s wearing irresistibly tight spandex. What do we do automatically? We look at her backside and size her up and down, and in the abyss of our mind we rate her. But are we done? No. As we pass her ahead, we ritually finish it off by looking through our rearview mirror to get a good glimpse of her front side. Now we’re wired and our hormones are jumping. She’s stuck on your mind for the rest of the day and eventually you will release that tension later on in your spare time; then move on to the next. We’ve just committed adultery.

Jesus specifically says in Matthew 5:28, “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” He’s brutally honest, isn’t He? Then why do we continue looking for that jogger as we drive around town? In 1 Corinthians 6:18 it states, “Flee from sexual immorality.” As Jesus said, sexual immorality is not just physically acting it out, but mentally as well. Sadly enough, we set ourselves up for destruction. It’s like a chain reaction. Our eyes feed our minds, then our minds feed our hormones and eventually we masturbate or even take it further. Some take their lustful thoughts into the bedroom with their wives or to other means.

What many don’t realize is that if we continue with these acts, it eventually escalates. I speak from experience. What starts off as thoughts as a teen, later escalates to pornography and premarital sex. The New Testament has something on sexual immorality in almost all of its books. But none says it better and with more clarity than 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5,7: “It is God’s will that you should be sanctified; that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control his own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the heathen, who do not know God … For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.”

What I am writing is not coming from my mouth; it is God’s demand. Many Christians think that because they say a little prayer they are saved and have no worries. Now I am not talking about our security of salvation, but we can’t worship God just with our mouths. We are to strive to be more like Him. I know it’s difficult to envision the idea of being like Him. After all Christ was perfect, however, Job was a human being just as we are. How did Job attain sexual purity? In Job 31:1, 9-12 he says, “I made a covenant with my eyes not to look lustfully at a girl. … If my heart has been enticed by a woman, or if I have lurked at my neighbor’s door, then may my wife grind another man’s grain, and may other men sleep with her. For that would have been shameful, a sin to be judged. It is a fire that burns to destruction; it would have uprooted my harvest.”

I am not saying that this will be easy to do. Since God has spoken to me to be pure, I have had nights in which I can’t sleep. I have been so tempted to give in that I have had to take a cold shower at 2 in the morning. With prayer and faith in our Lord we can attain purity. We need to realize how destructive lust is. Lusting isn’t Satan tempting us. It’s really us giving in to our fleshly desires. We seek pleasure more than we seek a holy life with our Creator. Once again, read the scriptures for yourselves. I now trust in God alone to help me remain faithful to Him and my future wife. In addition, sincerely ask God for forgiveness, and accountability with a strong Christian friend will help too. My pastor and I keep in contact and stumbling is not an “okay” option for us. Trust God and seek Him, seek to please Him and you will overcome sexual immorality. After all in 1 Corinthians 6:13 it states, “The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord.” He gave up his life for us. Why can’t we give up a 5 second muscle spasm?
