Galveston, Texas, is “unhealthy and unsafe” and city leaders are urging residents to stay away in the wake of Hurricane Ike. “Galveston cannot safely at this point accommodate its population,” City Manager Steve LeBlanc said. Even churches wanting to come help are being warned to stay away if they aren’t completely self-sufficient. “We would go in a downward spiral if everybody started coming back. Our resources are stretched to the max.”
