The Catholic Church has released a report saying that 20 missionaries were killed in the line of duty last year. The report, compiled by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, says that those who died violent deaths in the line of duty include an archbishop, several priests and religious and laypeople. Asia saw the most missionaries killed in the line of duty, including an archbishop killed in Iraq. The report avoids using the term, “martyrs,” as it is a term that has to be officially bestowed by the Catholic Church.
