700 Killed in a Stampede at a Pilgrimage Site in Mecca

Sad news today of Saudi Arabia. At 700 people were killed during a stampede in Mina, about 2 miles outside of Mecca. Authorities suspect those numbers could climb even higher.

The event happened during a ritual called “Stoning the Devil.” According to CNN, “In the ritual, crowds of pilgrims throw stones at three pillars in a re-enactment of when the Prophet Abraham stoned the devil and rejected his temptations, according to Muslim traditions.” Mina is of the many popular spots during the Hajj season where believers complete the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca.

CNN has footage from the event, but viewers beware—it’s graphic and disturbing.
