4 Questions to Ask Before You Pursue a New Job

As I was considering a career move recently, I felt the usual swirl of emotions: excitement, nervousness, and that gnawing fear of making the wrong choice. Like so many of us, I don’t want just any job—I want something meaningful that moves me forward, aligns with my values, and, ultimately, feels like part of God’s purpose for my life. But in a world full of job openings and career advice, it’s not always easy to know which opportunity is right or even if I’m making a choice for the right reasons.

If you’re in a similar spot, you’re not alone. Many young professionals today aren’t just looking for a paycheck—they want to feel like their work matters, like it fits into the bigger picture of who they’re becoming and what they’re called to do. For those of us who are people of faith, that desire to connect our work with our purpose is even stronger.

Finding the right role can be a big decision, one that’s both personal and practical. Through my own process, I realized that making these career choices feels a lot clearer when I ask a few key questions and bring God, my community, and trusted voices into the mix. Here are four questions that can help you discern if your next job will be more than a way to pay the bills and instead feel like a purposeful step toward where you’re meant to be.

1. Does This Job Align With My Core Values?

The Bible doesn’t specify which career path to choose, but it does call us to live lives of integrity, kindness, and service. Ask yourself if this job will allow you to stay true to your values. Will it allow you to serve others? Will it help you grow into a more honorable, just, and loving person?

Philippians 4:8 reminds us to dwell on whatever is true, honorable, and commendable. If a position compromises any of these things, it’s worth considering if it’s truly a good fit for you. Your work should be a place where you feel comfortable bringing your whole self, including your faith.

2. What Does My Community Think?

You don’t have to make this decision alone. Tap into your circle—whether that’s friends, family, mentors, or your church community. Proverbs 15:22 reminds us that “without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” Your friends might see strengths in you that you overlook or have valuable insights about the job itself. Sometimes, people outside the situation can offer wisdom that can help you weigh the pros and cons objectively.

Getting an outside perspective from those who know you well can also reveal blind spots. Be open to their input, whether it’s encouragement to go for it or caution to hold back.

3. What Does My Mentor or Pastor Say?

Trusted leaders who know you well, whether they’re pastors, mentors, or bosses, can provide a unique perspective on the potential of a job opportunity. Their guidance can help you see how this job might serve as a stepping stone in your calling or as a growth opportunity. These leaders are often positioned to equip you for your journey, as Ephesians 4:12 calls leaders to help “equip the saints for the work of ministry.”

A conversation with a leader you trust can help you process the decision more clearly and help ensure your next step fits within your broader goals and God’s purpose for your life.

4. What Do I Sense God is Saying to Me?

This one is personal, but it’s essential. Are you bringing this decision to God in prayer? Are you seeking peace in one direction over the other? Sometimes, God’s guidance is felt through a sense of calm or clarity about one path. Other times, it’s that nagging feeling that something isn’t quite right. When we pray and listen, God often brings clarity, aligning our hearts with His will.

Bringing these insights back to your community for confirmation can be a helpful next step. God’s guidance is usually affirmed through multiple channels—Scripture, prayer, community, and trusted leadership. With all these aspects aligned, you can approach your decision with confidence, knowing that whatever you choose, you’re not alone on this journey.
