The disruptive spirit of horrible airline company public relations has drifted briefly (very briefly) away from United and over to their scrappy, low-fare competition, Spirit. Say what you will about United. They may knock their passengers unconscious, drop scorpions from the ceiling and kill giant bunnies, but they don’t inspire wanton rioting.

That scene is from Fort Lauderdale, where Spirit Airlines canceled nine — count ’em, nine — flights in a brief window, which led to a angry mob of customers which then just became an angry mob. At least three people were arrested in the ensuing fury.

Spirit Airlines blamed its pilots for the cancellations, saying that their union, the Airline Pilots Association, International, was conspiring to delay and cancel flights to gain bargaining leverage. “The pilots are engaged in this illegal slowdown in order to bring pressure on Spirit during current negotiations for an amended collective bargaining agreement pursuant to Section 6 of the Railway Labor Act,” Spirit Airlines spokesperson Paul Barry said in a statement given to Buzzfeed News.
