Study: Pollution Kills 1.7 Million Kids Every Year

The World Health Organization has released a shocking new report that found that “polluted environments” are responsible for the deaths of 1.7 million children every year. That includes a quarter of all deaths of children under the age of five annually.

The definition of a polluted environment is broad—it encompasses everything from dirty water to second hand smoke and air pollution. These types of pollutions can lead to ailments like malaria and pneumonia, which are frequently fatal to children in many parts of the world.

An expert from the organization told Reuters that the report should spur change that could save the lives of millions:
