The Family Christian Store Chain Is Closing Down

It was just announced that Family Christian, a retail chain of more than 240 Christian book and gift stores, is closing down. The stores employed more than 3,000 people. Even though it’s been around for more than eight decades, the chain has struggled in recent years. Just over two years ago, the chain filed for bankruptcy and attempted a comeback.

They claimed to be “the largest non-profit Christian retailer selling books, bibles, movies, gifts, church supplies and more.”

Family Christian’s president told Christianity Today:

We had two very difficult years post-bankruptcy. Despite improvements in product assortment and the store experience, sales continued to decline. In addition, we were not able to get the pricing and terms we needed from our vendors to successfully compete in the market.

We have prayerfully looked at all possible options, trusting God’s plan for our organization, and the difficult decision to liquidate is our only recourse.
