The House of Reps. Has Passed a 20-Week Abortion Ban

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed new legislation that would make almost all abortions, after a mother has been pregnant for 20 weeks, illegal. The measure has exceptions for cases of rape or incest, or if doctors determine that the mother’s life is at risk.

The bill is called The Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, because its advocates say that a 20-week-old fetus has developed enough to feel physical pain.

Though President Trump has given indications that he would sign the measure if it makes it to his office, there is no indication yet of when it will come up for a vote in the Senate.

GOP Whip Sen. John Cornyn told reporters that the legislation is “not a near-term priority.”
