Woman Sues to Remove “So Help Me God” From Oath

French nationalist and green card holder Olga Paule Perrier-Bilbo’s only obstacle to becoming an American citizen is a four-word phrase she’d have to repeat to complete the citizenship process: “So help me God.”

Bilbo, an atheist, is suing to have that phrase removed from the oath of U.S. citizenship on the grounds that it is a violation of religious freedom and–therefore–unconstitutional.

Newsweek reports:

The phrase ‘so help me God,’” claims the suit, “Sends the ancillary message to members of the audience that disbelieve in God that they are outsiders, not full members of the political community, and an accompanying message to those that believe in God that they are insiders, favored members of the political community.
