HIV Returns in 2 Patients Previously Thought to Be Cured of the Virus

Two men who researchers previously believed had possibly been “cured” of HIV after a bone marrow transplant have now seen a recurrence of the virus. After the traces of HIV had become undetectable following bone marrow transplants to fight lymphoma in both men, doctors were encouraged they had potentially found a new way to fight the virus that causes AIDS. Dr. Timothy Henrich, a specialist in infectious diseases, told The Boston Globe, “This suggests that we need to look deeper, or we need to be looking in other tissues … the liver, gut and brain.” Doctors know of only one man who has ever been “cured” of HIV. The man, known as the “Berlin patient,” also underwent a bone marrow transplant, but received large doses of radiation and chemotherapy before the procedure …
