#MaybeHeDoesntHitYou Shines a Light on Different Types of Abuse

The hashtag “#MaybeHeDoesntHitYou” went viral this week with women around the world shedding light on their experiences with emotional abuse and how it can be as harmful as physical abuse in relationships.

The hashtag was started by writer, Zahira Kelly, who wanted to talk about the different forms of abuse and some of the ways they can show up. This wasn’t Kelly’s first time tweeting about abuse; she told the BBC that she wants to empower women to recognize “damaging situations.”

Kelly told the BBC she hopes the campaign will help others recognize abusive patterns in their own life: “Even if it doesn’t qualify as abusive under common notions that only validate physical abuse, it’s still real and your pain is real. And you deserve so much better. We all do.”
