Nearly 200 Arrested During Baltimore Riots

In the hours after the funeral of Freddie Gray, who sustained mysterious, fatal injuries while in police custody two weeks ago, riots broke out in the streets of Baltimore. Numerous stores were looted, more than 140 cars were burned, several police officers were injured and nearly 200 arrests were made. By the evening, the governor had declared a state of emergency and officials called in troops from the National Guard to help restore order. A city-wide curfew has also been implemented. The family of Freddie Gray has strongly condemned the violence.

The response from city officials has also been criticized by some, as TV footage showed long periods of time where no police presence was seen as stores were being looted and destroyed. Over the weekend, the city’s mayor said that their strategy for protests had been to give “those who wish to destroy space to do that as well.” She has since decried the violence and vowed to bring those responsible to justice. According to some reports, early in the afternoon, police received information that some high school students were planning to “purge” (like the movie in which lawlessness is temporarily permitted) when school let out. This morning the mayor tweeted that officials “are working to ensure that most government services can operate normally.” More than 2,000 people have joined a Facebook group that seeks to unite community members in efforts to clean up the city following the destruction …
