Nigerian Military Says They Know the Location of the Girls Kidnapped By Boko Haram

The Nigerian military said yesterday that though they now know the location of the more than 200 schoolgirls kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram in April, they believe that sending in rescuers would be too dangerous. A military official told reporters and demonstrators, “But where they are held, can we go there with force? We can’t kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back.” According to the BBC, the Nigerian government recently pulled out of a deal in which Boko Haram had agreed to free as many as 50 of the girls in exchange for 100 Boko Haram fighters currently being held in Nigerian prisons.

The Nigerian government has faced widespread criticism for their efforts rescuing the schoolgirls—who are mostly Christians and have reportedly been forced to convert to Islam—and fighting the radical group that has killed thousands of people in the country since their rise in 2009.
