One of the Dallas Protesters Shot Was Protecting Her Son

In last night’s violent and deadly ending to a downtown Dallas protest, two civilians were shot while protesting peacefully.

One of the civilians was Shetamia Taylor, a 37-year-old mother who was shot in the right calf while trying to protect her children from the gunfire.

According to the Associated Press, Taylor was at the protest with her four sons who are between the ages of 12 and 17. When the shooting began she “threw herself over her sons.”

“She jumped on top to cover him on the ground as she pushed him in between two cars in the curb,” her sister, Theresa Williams told WFAA, a Dallas ABC affiliate. “All she could think about was her other three boys—where are they at.”

She was shot covering her 15-year-old, and the other three boys ran in opposite directions. They stayed there for about five minutes before being rescued by police. The family wasn’t reunited for several hours because the other sons got stuck behind a police barricade while officers engaged in a standoff with a suspect.

Taylor had surgery this morning and is expected to recovery.

“She’s not so much worried about the gunshot wound she has on her leg,” Williams told WFAA. “We’re watching the news in the hospital room, and all she can do is say, ‘Lord, be with those families of those police officers.’ And that’s what she kept repeating.”
