Robert Downey Jr. Will Do Iron Man 4 if Mel Gibson Directs It.

Robert Downey Jr.’s been a little cocky about being the world’s highest paid actor, sure, but he’s been a decent guy too—using his considerable clout to angle for higher paychecks for his less famous Avengers and sticking up for the kids. But one of his long standing missions has been to return Mel Gibson to the limelight. RDJ has been vocal about how Gibson stuck by him throughout the low points of his own career/personal life, and now he’s looking to return the favor—possibly by bringing him on to direct Iron Man 4.

To be clear, there are no current plans for Iron Man 4, but where there’s a billion dollars to be made, be sure Hollywood will find a way. Downey hasn’t made a huge secret of the fact that he’s a little tired of the Iron Man armor, but told Deadline that he’d be open to the idea if Gibson directed it. (Interviewer: How about the idea you’ll do [Iron Man 4] if Mel directs it? Downey: Correct …Why not? That movie would be bananas.)

As a director, Gibson’s track record is solid, with Braveheart, the Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto. As a person, Gibson has said some truly abhorrent things, but Downey insists that those things came from different time. “Nobody should make a case for somebody who just wants forgiveness but hasn’t changed,” Downey explained. “But he’s a fundamentally different guy.” And who would know better than Robert Downey Jr.? …
