Starbucks Price Hike May Get Them in More Hot Water

Your drink at Starbucks could cost more than you’re used to starting early next week—up to 30 cents more.

At the beginning of July every year since 2013, Starbucks has raised the prices on their drinks, usually unannounced and somewhere between 5 and 20 cents, depending on the drink.

This year, a computer glitch accidentally raised the prices last week instead of on July 12 as scheduled, leading Starbucks to release news about the price increases in advance.

They released a statement on Saturday saying,

On July 12, Starbucks is planning a small price increase on select beverages. Unfortunately, that price adjustment was prematurely entered into the point of sale systems in our U.S. company-operated stores. As a result, some customers were charged incorrectly. The maximum any customer could have been overcharged is 30 cents per beverage.

The error has been corrected and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. If a customer believes this mistake impacted the price of their beverage, we encourage them to please contact Starbucks Customer Service at 1-800-782-7282, and we will gladly make this right.

This comes as Starbucks was just in the hot seat for restructuring their rewards program earlier this year from rewarding customers for frequency of visits to now rewarding based on how much they spend.

However, Starbucks announced a 6 percent global sales increase for the first quarter of 2016 and almost $5 billion in revenue, according to CNN Money.
