The State of Virginia Is Ending Veteran Homelessness

Today, the governor of Virginia, Terry McAuliffe, is set to announce that Virginia is the first state to end homelessness among vets. This announcement is based on the federal homelessness designation, which means Virginia has no homeless veterans who have not been offered housing, even if they refuse it. To meet the standard, Virginia—or any state, for that matter—has to provide housing for a veteran within 90 days and must and have more homes available than veterans needing them. Earlier this year, Connecticut also took big strides in reducing homelessness among veterans. Several states are expected to follow. Puerto Rico will provide “recently transitioning veterans” and their dependents with in-state tuition at public colleges.
