Stephen Colbert to Replace David Letterman

The rumors were true. CBS has officially announced that Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman on the Late Show when Letterman retires in 2015. The Colbert Report host (whose contract with Comedy Central conveniently ends at the end of the year) has signed a five year deal to host the show.

Colbert joins a shifting cast of late-night hosts battling to draw younger viewers to their show. He’ll battle the likes of Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers for ratings, but CBS is confident he’s the right man for the job, calling him “one of the most inventive and respected forces on television.”

Colbert himself has greeted the news with his usual mix of enthusiasm and humor:

“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career. I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead,” he said in a statement. “I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”
