Three bombings happened across Saudi Arabia on Monday—killing four and injuring at least five—leading many to believe that they were coordinated to destabilize the government.
One of the bombings occurred outside of the mosque where Islam’s Prophet Muhammad is buried in Medina, it’s considered one of the holiest sites in Islam and one of the stops a person makes on their pilgrimage to Mecca.
Qari Ziyaad Patel was in the mosque and told the Associated Press that the blast sounded like it was the celebratory cannon blast to signify time to break the fast until he felt the ground moving. “The vibrations were very strong,” he said. “It sounded like a building imploded.”
The four who died were security guards who confronted the suicide bomber, causing him to detonate his bombs.
Earlier Monday, a suicide bomber detonated his explosives near the U.S. Consulate in Jiddah. In this case, two security guards confronted the bomber as well, leading him to detonate, killing himself and wounding the guards.
There was also an explosion in Qatif, near the a mosque. The suicide bomber blew himself up without injuring anyone else.
No one has claimed responsibility for the bombings yet, but ISIS is expected to be behind the attacks.
