Peace talks between pro-Russian rebel groups and government officials from Ukraine, scheduled to take place on Friday, have been unexpectedly canceled for reasons that are still unclear. The latest negotiations between the sides first kicked off Wednesday, but the discussions proposed today represented important steps forward to a potential ceasefire. From the BBC: “Friday’s round had been expected to tackle issues including the withdrawal of heavy weapons from the front line, the exchange of prisoners and ending Ukraine’s economic blockade of rebel-held areas.” At this point, no official reason was put forth as to why the talks were called off at the last minute.
