UN: 4 Million People in South Sudan Are in Danger of Starvation

This week, officials from the UN said that because of conflicts within the country, by the end of 2014, a third of the population of South Sudan could be on the brink of mass starvation. At a conference in Oslo the United Nations’ aid chief, Valerie Amos, said that territorial fighting and ethnic violence has many forced farmers and local herders to leave their crops and livestock as they flee conflict areas. The result could be a huge shortage of food that could threaten the lives of 4 million people. Amos told donors and those gathered at the conference, that the UN is seeking $1.8 billion in aid for the country, and publically pleaded with former South Sudanese government official turned-rebel leader Riek Machar to end the fighting …
