New U.S. Visas Make It Harder for Travelers Who Have Been to Syria

The U.S. is introducing new measures that will make it harder for Europeans with dual citizenship in Syria, Iraq, Sudan and Iran to enter the country. The new visa requirements will also make it harder on European travelers who have visited any of those countries within the last five years. Though the law only affects a small portion of Europeans, there is some concern among travelers that normally experience visa-free travel to the U.S. Iran has also expressed concern that the U.S. is in breach of last year’s nuclear accord by penalizing those traveling to the Islamic Republic for legitimate business reasons. According to a congressional aid though, there will be exceptions for people who traveled to any of the countries for government work, UN work, humanitarian or journalistic reasons or legitimate business with Iran. Specifics for the new regulations, obviously intended to make it harder for supporters of the Islamic State to enter the country, along with an implementation plan will be announced by the Department of Homeland Security as early as Thursday.
