14 Actually Good Rom-Coms to Watch This Weekend, Whatever Your Relationship Status

Ah, Valentine’s Day. A day you either love or hate. No matter how you feel about the day, there’s no shortage of films that cover every possible relationship status. Maybe you and your Valentine aren’t really the fancy dinner couple and would rather hang out with some pizza and watch a fun, rom-com. Or maybe you’re single and looking to stay in with some pizza and, well, watch a fun, romantic movie. Or maybe you’re not really sure where you stand with someone else so you’re gonna invite them over for a fun, romantic movie and see if it inspires any conversations.

Whatever your Valentine’s Day plans look like this years, here’s 15 rom-coms you could watch to prepare this weekend.

Valentine’s Day

The beauty of this movie — aside from the incredibly stacked cast — is how no matter your situationship, there’s some sort of representation. New couples, long-term marriages, relationships on the rocks, semi-happily single folks, teen love — it’s all there.

Love and Basketball

Omar Epps and Sanaa Lathan are childhood friends-turned-lovers in this classic rom-com. It’s one-part sports, one-part romance, so there’s a little something for everyone.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Aside from the ethical dilemma of magazine editor Kate Hudson pitching an idea to ruin Matthew McConaughey’s life, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days has everything that makes rom-coms great: chemistry, cheesy lines, love ferns.

The Big Sick

Husband and wife duo Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon co-wrote one of the best rom-coms in recent memories. Based on their true love story, The Big Sick follows the unexpected ups and downs of relationships. It’s emotional, it’s funny — it’s love!

10 Things I Hate About You

Health Ledger, Julia Stiles, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Gabrielle Union and more star in arguably one of the best teen rom-coms of all-time. It set high expectations for high school romance, and even though most teens aren’t performing big band numbers to profess their love or learning a brand new language, it’s nice to dream about it.

When Harry Met Sally

Often heralded as the best rom-com of all time, Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal perfectly wrestle with the idea of whether or not men and women can remain friends without catching feelings for one another. Watching the two tiptoe around love over the years will have you locked in the whole time.

Crazy Rich Asians

While it took much longer than it should have to see Asian representation in the rom-com genre, the wait was worth it because Crazy Rich Asians is pure rom-com perfection from start to finish. Plus, this film gave us Henry Golding as a new romantic male lead, which is something we didn’t even know we needed.

The Proposal

Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds are the perfectly chaotic couple of our dreams. Bullock portrays a Type-A no-nonsense boss who forces her assistant (Reynolds) to help her keep her citizenship through a sham marriage. We all know they end up together in the end, but it sure is hilarious to watch it play out.

Mamma Mia!

It is always a good time to watch Meryl Streep sing and dance on a Greek island.

How to Be Single

Valentine’s Day isn’t always a happy day for everyone, and for many it’s a difficult reminder of their current lack of a relationship status. So, to lift your spirits, spend your day laughing about the single life with Rebel Wilson, Alison Brie, Damon Wayans Jr. and more.

Hitch

Will Smith and Kevin James? As unlikely a pairing as you could expect to find, but the two end up making comedy magic in this breezy love story. Usher’s “Yeah” has never been more entertaining.

The Princess Bride

Many think that “I love you” are the three most romantic words, but they’ve clearly never heard Wesley tell Buttercup “As you wish.”

27 Dresses

For anyone who feels as if they’re “always the bridesmaid, never the bride,” let Katherine Heigl and James Marsden remind you that your one true love might be right around the corner.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding

Wedding planning is already hectic on its own, but add in a massive family and things can easily go from stressful to pure chaos. If you’ve feeling stressed from planning for your big day, take a break to see how much worse it could be. But hey, at least true love prevails!
