In case you missed this weekend’s AFC championship game, the New England Patriots fell to the Denver Broncos in a 26-16 thrashing. Despite going up against Peyton Manning’s Broncos at home, the sporting good store Modell’s was so confident that the Pats would pull off the win that they printed $500,000 worth of Patriots AFC Championship gear before the game was even played. In an interview with the Boston Globe, the company’s CEO defended the move, saying, “We took a tremendous risk, but you know what? People expect us to have the merchandise. We printed up everything: hats, shirts, T-shirts, novelties, pennants—you name it—for men, women, kids.” Because the store isn’t allowed to sell the inaccurate clothing, they instead will be donated to impoverished communities in developing countries around the world.
