Is it obvious we’re fans of this movie yet? Crazy Rich Asians, the first Hollywood film to star an all-Asian cast in a quarter-century, toppled industry expectations this weekend to take in nearly $25 million in earnings from Friday to Sunday. Include its Wednesday and Thursday returns, and the $34 million total tops the aggressive $31 million projections. (h/t Box Office Mojo)
On a sparse (considering its title) $30 million budget, Crazy Rich Asians is set to make a neat profit for Warner Bros. The movie’s expected to clear $100 million domestically and do well overseas. The lesson, underscored by other 2018 box-office hits Black Panther and Ocean’s 8: Representation not only can be a recipe for equal footing at the box office, but higher earnings to boot.
Take note, Hollywood.
