
Hot on the heels of an all-female Ghostbusters reboot, Marvel has announced that earth’s mightiest heroes are also getting a girl power overhaul following a big, mysterious “comic book event” taking place this summer that promises to be the biggest shakeup the Marvel Universe has endured since its conception back in the ’60s. That event, called The Secret Wars, is essentially going to reboot Marvel’s titles, but they’re not all going to look the same. Case in point, The Avengers (now called The A-Force) which will follow a core group of women (She-Hulk, Captain Marvel, Medusa and Nico Minoru) but also involve the scores of female characters from the Marvel lineup who have spent most of their time playing second fiddle to Captain America and Iron Man.
Marvel’s been deliberately shaking things up its heavily white, male roster a few months now, handing the mantle of Captain America to a black man, Thor’s hammer to a woman and making the core cast of the ironically named X-Men all women, but this represents their biggest shift so far.
