Joaquin Phoenix’s return to the big screen after Joker is on the complete other side of the human spectrum from the sociopathic clown portrayal that won him an Oscar. In C’mon C’mon, Phoenix plays Johnny, a normal guy who forges a connection with his young nephew Jesse (Woody Norman) while visiting his sister Viv (Gabby Hoffman).
That’s the setup for Mike Mills’ latest exploration of love and family, an obsession that worked wonders in beautiful movies like 20th Century Women and Beginners (both well worth watching if you haven’t). And while Phoenix was certainly show-y in an Oscar-y way for Joker, this movie returns him to the gentler sensibilities where he’s free to employ his gift for careful nuance like he has in Her and The Master.
The movie will release in theaters on November 19.
