It’s not as big as Marvel or as trusted as Pixar but if you’re looking for cool in your movies, you’re looking for A24. The red-hot film studio has become second-hand for a certain type of hip, mid-budget, critically acclaimed movie that pushes back against the idea that nobody’s making original films anymore. And if you’ve been looking to catch up on them, HBO Max is about to make it easier. The streamer is adding a ton of A24 movies later this summer.
You’ve got movies like Oscar Isaac’s creepy android flick Ex Machina, Brie Larson’s harrowing kidnapping yarn Room and Tom Hardy’s one-man stunner Locke all headed to streaming, which gives HBO Max a major win in the streaming wars. It’s already home to a pretty compelling mix (Studio Ghibli’s entire catalog, all the DC Comics movies and, of course, HBO’s own content) but 28 new A24 movies is a big deal. That’s not every A24 movie (unfortunately, The VVitch isn’t on here, nor is The Lighthouse) but what it does have is pretty good.
