Joel Smallbone Brings His Family’s Inspiring Journey to the Big Screen in ‘Unsung Hero’

Joel Smallbone is heading to the big screen — and he’s bringing his family along with him.

The for KING & COUNTRY singer has partnered with Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company to create a new film, Unsung Hero, which adapts the Smallbone family’s real-life journey from Australia to the United States in the 1990s.

Smallbone stars in the film as his father, who at 39, moved his family to Nashville after his successful music company in Australia collapsed. The film picks up at the family’s American origin story in 1991, and explores the resilience of family as well as the burgeoning talent of Joel’s sister, Rebecca St. James, whose singing ability starts to draw attention.

The trailer also gives a nod to the future success of for KING + COUNTRY members Joel and his brother Luke Smallbone, as children in the film, aspiring for their own record deal.

Beyond starring in the lead role, Smallbone also served as a cowriter and codirector alongside Richard Ramsey, and he wasn’t not the only family member present. His younger brother, Luke, contributed as a producer alongside Justin Tolley and Josh Walsh (known for his work on Jesus Revolution).

Joining Joel on the cast is Kirrilee Berger, Jonathan Jackson, Lucas Black, Candace Cameron Bure, Terry O’Quinn and Hillary Scott.

The film is set to release in theaters everywhere on April 26, 2024.
