Uncharted has had one of the wildest pre-production journeys of any movie in recent memory, languishing in Hollywood purgatory so long that Mark Wahlberg — who was originally attached to star — got too old for it to work and was re-cast as our hero’s grizzled mentor. Tom Holland replaced Wahlberg as young Nathan Drake, an amateur treasure hunter who tours the world solving ancient mysteries and collecting whatever fortunes lie across antiquity’s rickety old bridges and behind its assorted booby traps. Still, those adventures were a cakewalk compared to getting this video game turned into a movie.
But now we’ve got a trailer, which technically means the movie should be releasing early next year. The dialog is pretty hokey but, well, this is a video game adaptation, which have a pretty shaky track record. And sometimes a silly script can work if a movie leans hard enough into a classic Hollywood adventure vibe, so we’ll see how this movie works out in February, assuming it actually comes out.
