Earlier this week, Kamasi Washington dropped a brand new song called “The Garden Path.” As usual, it’s a stunner, and he brought it to Late Night With Jimmy Fallon for a rare TV performance (Fallon says it’s his TV debut, but Washington played Later …with Jools Holland in 2018, so it’s technically just his American TV debut).
That said, Washington might just be the biggest jazz artist of his generation, so any TV performance is a gift. He brings his enormous band along for the trip to deliver a stunning, out-of-body experience of a performance.
