Car Seat Headrest is back with a brief followup to 2020’s excellent Making a Door Less Open, which took his scuzzy, Tame Impala-tinged rock to new and intriguing depths. This time, he’s dropped MADLO: Influences, a four-song EP of covers of songs that served as influences for Making a Door Less Open.
The songs in question are David Bowie’s “Golden Years,” the Who’s “Substitute,” Nine Inch Nails’ “March of the Pigs” and Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill.” Tackling songs this sacred isn’t necessarily advisable but Will Toledo — the man behind Car Seat Headrest — is smart enough to know his way around a good cover: you’ve gotta pay tribute to not just the music and lyrics of the original number, but also the general vibe and energy — while still adding a fresh, Car Seat Headrest-y spin to make it more than just a well-produced karaoke situation.
