I guess if you’re going to work through all of your personal conflicts and have it out with your own soul, an upper-level room in what looks like an abandoned hospital is the place to do it. For his new video “Why,” NF raps amid walls of scrawled graffiti and grimy windows.
It’s a lonely video, and sad in a way, but the imagery here is pretty freaky, too. NF scrawls a Joker smile over his lips and at one point brandishes a machete around. It’s wack, but also, the song goes way in, so there’s something fascinating and compelling about it.
At one point, NF raps, “I wanna be great but I get it in the way of myself and I think about everything that I could never be/Why do I do it though?/Why you always lookin’ aggravated?/Not a choice, you know I had to make it”
The video begins and ends with the rapper muttering, “Too many faces, too many faces, too many faces.” It’s tough, but it’s effective.
