Nobody Panic, But Blockbuster Might Be Coming Back

It seems like a certain beloved former video rental chain might be gearing up for a comeback. Maybe.

A mysterious message on the Blockbuster website has sent the internet into a frenzy. The message reads: “We are working on rewinding your movie.” Could this mean that Blockbuster is coming back from the dead?

And that’s not all. Blockbuster’s Twitter feed is adding fuel to the rumor mill that the company could be coming back. In a recent tweet, the company joked about using VHS and DVDs as currency in its “new business idea” of becoming a bank.

It’s worth noting that Blockbuster is now owned by Dish Network, which bought the company in 2011 for a hefty sum of $320 million. However, back in its heyday in 1994, Blockbuster was valued at a staggering $8.4 billion with over 2,800 stores worldwide. Fast forward to 2023, and there is only one Blockbuster store left in the world, located in Bend, Oregon.

Regardless of whether or not Blockbuster is coming back, the nostalgia surrounding the brand is undeniable. It’s hard not to feel a sense of longing for the days when choosing a movie to watch involved physically browsing the aisles of a store and holding the physical copy in your hands. Who knows, maybe a Blockbuster comeback would be just what we need in these uncertain times. In the meantime, let’s “be kind, rewind” and remember the good old days.
