This weekend, mass shootings took the lives of more than 30 Americans, injuring dozens more. It has been a devastating few days marked by horrific acts of violence and hatred.
Years ago, the late children’s show host and Presbyterian minister Fred Rogers was asked about what to say to kids who find themselves scared about what they are seeing in the news.
His advice remains as poignant today as it did back then: “Always look for the helpers … If you look for the helpers, you’ll know there is hope.”
It’s a simple idea, but one that can encourage us even in the darkest of times. It’s also a call for adults to not only look for the helpers in our society, but to become them ourselves. To help our neighbors in their hour of need and to help them find ways to prevent this kind of violence in the future.
