Is Tina Fey Going to Take Over ‘SNL’?

Tina Fey might be making a return to 30 Rock (no, not that one).

According to insider information, the former Saturday Night Live member is in talks to take over as executive producer. The theory circulates as Lorne Michaels, the current executive producer and creator of SNL, is rumored to be stepping down in the next couple of years.

At the time, the 78-year-old Michaels has not made any formal announcements about his departure from the legendary sketch comedy series, which he founded back in 1975. Last year, Michaels told The New York Times, “I have no plans to retire,” indicating that he’s still fully committed to the show.

However, during a candid conversation with Gayle King back in 2021, Michaels hinted at the possibility of a new phase, away from Studio 8H.

“I think I’m committed to doing the show until its 50th anniversary, which is in three years,” he said. “I’d like to see that through and I have a feeling that would be a really good time to leave.”

Enter Tina Fey, who is widely regarded as the top contender – some even say the only contender – to take over the reins of SNL.

As the show gears up for its 50th season, set to launch this fall pending the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strike, many fans feel like it’s the right time for Michaels to pass the baton to someone else. Fey has yet to confirm or deny the rumor, but we’re holding out hope for the queen of 30 Rock to make a triumphant return.
