Meg Stalter Is Developing a New Comedy Called ‘Church Girls’ for A24 and HBOMax

Hacks breakout star Meg Stalter is developing a new half-hour comedy called Church Girls for HBOMax. Deadline says the show will follow “a 20-year-old Christian closeted lesbian as she wrestles with her sexuality and faith in God, while entering adulthood in suburban Ohio.” The show is based on Stalter’s own life growing up gay while attending a Pentecostal Church in Cleveland. She will also star.

On social media, Stalter has talked a lot about life as an openly bisexual Christian woman who has struggled to find a Christian community that would let her join. “I believe in God, I just don’t go to church,” she told iNews.

“Not to get too church girl on you but God loves us the way we are and only wants us to take care of each other,” she tweeted last year. “The fact that the church isn’t always inclusive breaks my heart.” No release date on Church Girls yet, but it’s definitely one to keep an eye on.
