A small subsection of crime movies have blossomed in recent years that take a more specific look at underrepresented portions of the United States. While many crime flicks aim big, movies like Wind River, Hell or High Water or even Good Time, with its seedy, unglamorous New York, are basing their worlds in overlooked areas and rooting them in overlooked people. Little Woods appears to be in that tradition.
The North Dakota-based thriller follows stars Tessa Thompson and Lily James (already, sign us up) as sisters who revert back to small-time criminality to help their mom pay off their house and Lily James’ character escape the control of an abusive ex.
The trailer shows the women dealing oxy, loading money into cardboard boxes (the best place for illegitimate cash!) and evading authorities. It looks taut and sparse and lead by two actors we love in Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok, Sorry to Bother You) and James (Baby Driver).
Little Woods comes out April 19. Prepare to, pretty much literally, see a side of the country you haven’t before.
