
A new monument to atheism is set to be unveiled at the Bradford County Courthouse in Florida later this month. The 1,500-pound granite bench will be placed in a “free speech” area courtyard next to a statue of the Ten Commandments. After the group American Atheists sued the county to have the Ten Commandments removed last year, a negotiation agreement was reached to allow an atheism monument to also be featured, which will be paid for and maintained by American Atheists. In addition to inspirational quotes from historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and, of course, the founder of American Atheists, the massive granite bench will also feature tasteful engravings of scriptures that reference Old Testament punishments for violating certain laws in the Ten Commandments, like death by stoning …
