According to a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science, there may be some actual scientific validity to so-called “near-death experiences.” By looking at lab-induced reactions in mice, the researchers found that even after the heart stops beating, the brain continues to function—at a higher level than its normal state. Up to 20 percent of people who have cardiac arrest report a similar, eerie experience that includes a heighten sense of perception and visions.
