Sean Penn is on the ground working with Vice Studios to create a documentary about Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
The Office of the President of Ukraine posted a statement on their Facebook page about Penn’s presence in Ukraine, thanking the actor for his work and help.
“The director specially came to Kyiv to record all the events that are currently happening in Ukraine and to tell the world the truth about Russia’s invasion of our country. Sean Penn is among those who support Ukraine in Ukraine today. Our country is grateful to him for such a show of courage and honesty,” the translated statement said.
According to the statement, Penn had visited Ukraine back in November 2021 to prepare for the documentary. Penn also spoke with the president, journalists and the military and attended a press conference the day after the invasion.
“Sean Penn demonstrates the courage that many others, including Western politicians, lack. The more such people in our country now, true friends of Ukraine, who support the struggle for freedom, the sooner it will be possible to stop Russia’s treacherous attack,” the statement continues.
This is not the first time Penn has stepped into a conflict zone. Back in 2005, Penn traveled to New Orleans to aid Hurricane Katrina victims. In 2010, he also traveled to Haiti in the aftermath of the earthquake, which later became the subject for his 2020 documentary Citizen Penn.
