The White House Raises the ‘We the People’ Signature Threshold

The White House’s “We the People” online petition site is a handy tool that’s seen a lot of action lately. The idea is, any cause can be submitted to the site and, if it gets enough signatures, will be addressed by the administration. The threshold had been set at 25,000 signatures in 30 days, but that was, evidently, getting a little too easy to achieve. In a statement, the White House announced plans to raise the threshold to 100,000 signatures, leaving only one current petition—the one to recognize Westboro Baptist Church as a “hate group”—eligible for the administration’s attention. On the one hand, the move makes sense. It’s not like the government can just take on every single cause-of-the-moment.
