The Gideons, thoose ubiquitous Bible distributors, are celebrating 100 years of handing out free copies of the Bible. The non-denominational, non-clergy driven organization has distributed nearly 1.5 billion Bibles since its inception in 1908. The notoriously publicity-shy group has downplayed their century mark. “We’ve never been an association that necessarily dwelt on the past,” Jerry Burden, the organization’s executive director, said. “We always work in the present and look to the future. We’re a very low-profile organization. That’s been our underlining philosophy. For us, we look to be around another 100 years.”
