Pres. Trump’s travel bans may have been stalled in the courts, but the number of refugees allowed in the United States is plummeting.
According to a new report from the State Department Refugee Processing Center, in March, just 2,070 came into the country— a drop of 54% in just a month.
By comparison, nearly 10,000 refugees were welcomed into the U.S. last October—though, that number has been falling every month since. The refugees came from Somalia, Syria, Burma, Iraq, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ukraine, Iraq and Iran.
Despite the roadblock to Trump’s travel ban, other parts of his executive order still apply, including, a cap of 50,000 refugees for 2017—despite a plan from the Obama administration to resettle 110,000 this year. So far, in fiscal year 2017, more than 39,000 have been resettled, and there are still six months left.
